Why Not Unlimited

No Resource is “Unlimited”

Q: So many other hosting companies are stating to offer unlimited storage, why not Kansas Hosting?
A: Hosting Companies with Unlimited storage are making some gambles.

  • First they bet that you will not use the unlimited storage much beyond the average website storage of 3GB, after all good web designers limit the size of pages and sites to increase the speed.
  • Then they bet that you won’t notice that those sites actually do have a physical limit of the cheap hard drives they run those servers on.
  • They bet no one will every visit your site so you will not notice the slow speeds of commodity SATA hard disk drives
  • They bet that no one will “abuse” the unlimited and actually fill up their drives.

At Kansas Hosting, we limit the capacity of customers to fair constraints depending on their plan. By doing this we can use fast 15krpm SCSI, SAS and SSD drives. Our servers don’t get crowded and slow. We save those commodity drives to provide a reliable backup for all of our servers, that runs daily and archives weekly.

Q: What about unlimited bandwidth?
A: Unlimited bandwidth is even more tricky. With bandwidth there is an instantaneous limit of the bandwidth to the server, if one site is hogging all the bandwidth to that server, other sites suffer. Kansas Hosting has more than enough bandwidth available for all of our customers but we need to charge for appropriate use to keep that pipe open in the future.

Q: But you have plans with unlimited domains?
Domains are just a small portion of the hosting component, each site hosted on those domains use up the disk space and bandwidth which we do charge for.
